Born November 11, 1918, Andy Evans was destined for the military from day one. His father was a career military officer and, when the time came, Andy continued the tradition. Graduating from West Point in June 1941, he embarked on a distinguished military service that spanned 32 years. His career included four combat tours in three wars and numerous high level command and staff assignments.

The ultimate fighter pilot, he flew two combat tours in World War II, becoming an "Ace" over Germany in the P-51 with 8 confirmed kills. During the Korean War he was shot down by anti-aircraft fire while on his 67th combat mission in the F-84. He spent the remainder of that conflict with the dubious honor of being the highest-ranking Air Force POW. By all accounts, he was also the most mistreated captive and spent his entire time in solitary confinement. His final combat tour was in Southeast Asia, where he flew numerous combat missions in the F-4 over North Vietnam.

His assignments included command of fighter units in Spain, Korea and the U.S.; a tour on the Joint Staff, Executive Assistant to the Chief of Staff, USAF; Commander, 65th Air Division, Spain; Director of Development, USAF R/D; Commander, Tactical Air Warfare Center; Deputy Commander, 13th Air Force; Commander U.S. Military Assistance Command, Thailand. The epitome of the "Whole Man", Andy was also an accomplished athlete. He was a 3-time Air Force Tennis Champion, Inter-Service Squash Champion, and winner of several prestigious golf tournaments, including the Alabama State Amateur Championship.

Andy Evans was a beloved husband and father, as well as a true American Hero. He passed away on December 25, 2001. He is survived by his sons: A. Jay Evans, San Antonio, TX, and Col. Dick Evans, Charleston, S.C.; his daughters: Susu Cheatwood, Fayetteville, N.C., and Cathy Geib, San Antonio, TX; and ten grandchildren.
