YOUNGSTOWN – Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the L.E. Black, Phillips and Holden Funeral Home for Laurel “Lollie” Thompson who went home to be with God on Oct. 31, 2012, at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Mrs. Thompson was born June 10, 1928, in Clairton, Pa., to parents Marcell and Odell Thomas LaBooth. She was raised by her father and stepmother Emma LaBooth.

Lollie became blind at the age of five after a severe fever. She then attended and graduated from Western Pa. School for blind children. After graduation she became a teacher of Braille at her Alma Mater.

She entered into holy matrimony on June 10, 1977, to James Thompson.

Mrs. Thompson was also employed at the former Southside Hospital as a developer of x-rays. She was also employed at the Society for the Blind until retirement. Lollie knitted quilts for St. Jude Children’s Hospital and also knitted sweaters for the African Children’s Mission. She was an avid book reader and was a faithful member of St. Patrick’s Parish until she was no longer able to attend. Laurel cherished the home visits and fellowship led by Debbie Sharp after she wasn’t able to attend services. She loved spending time talking with her family and friends.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her sisters, Mrs. Jeanette Pope and Elder Betty Bell-Funderburgh, both of Youngstown; a cousin who was reared as a sister, Mrs. Audrey Heart of Columbus; a brother, Thomas (Sonya) Fannings of Tacoma, Wash.; a nephew who was like a son, Peter (Shandra) Riddle; a goddaughter, Jill Partee; a source of support, Arlene and Lisa Jeffries and Elaine Walsh; and a host of nieces, nephews other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; stepmother; brothers Richard Fannings, Marcell Jr. and Warren LaBooth; sisters Pauline Sanchez, and Dianetta Payne; and nephews and a niece.

Friends may call one hour prior to the services from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home
