WEST BRANCH, Iowa -- Janie H. Slach, 55, died Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2003, at her home near West Branch after a two month illness with cancer.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at the West Branch United Methodist Church, 203 N. Downey St., West Branch. The Rev. Scot Patrick will officiate. Family burial will be held at the Howard Cemetery on the Slach family farm at a later date.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, at the church. Memorials may be made to Iowa City Hospice, West Branch First Responders. The Barker Funeral Home, West Branch, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Slach was born on Sept. 19, 1948, in Iowa City, the daughter of Lowell and Helen Chipman Hartsock. She married Dale Slach on Aug. 25, 1972, in West Branch.

In her early years she attended school in Colorado Springs and graduated from Iowa City High School in 1966.

She and her husband farmed north of West Branch for more than 30 years.

She worked for the West Branch Animal Clinic for several years and most recently worked at Heritage Property Management, Iowa City.

She enjoyed spending time with her family and caring for the farm livestock as well as the dog and cats. Her pets included Trixie, Little, Jones and Robert. She spent much time following West Branch High School athletics.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Dawn Kepley and husband Derek of Ames; a son, Christopher of West Branch; a grandson, Dylan Kepley of Ames; two brothers, Dick Hartsock of Missouri and Jerry Hartsock and wife Lisa of Southern Pines, N.C.; her mother-in-law, Laura Slach of West Branch; a brother-in-law, Scott Slach and wife Lisa of Riverside; two sisters-in-law, Sandy Tuttle and husband Ted of West Branch and Kathy Prybil and husband Don of Riverside; several nieces and nephews; and numerous extended family and cherished friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her stepmother, Elizabeth Hartsock.
WEST BRANCH, Iowa -- Kenneth J. Slach, 84, died Friday, March 25, 2005, at his home near Downey.

The Rev. Bob Boudewyns will officiate the services. Burial will be at West Branch Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shriner's Crippled Children, the West Branch Fire and Rescue Department or to the donor's choice of charity.

Mr. Slach was born Dec. 17, 1920, in West Liberty, the son of John and Verna Herr Slach. He was married to Arlene Paulson from 1942-68 and has been married to Betty Naeve since 1974.

He graduated from West Branch High School in 1937.

He farmed and was an electrical contractor in the West Branch area, owning Slach Electric.

He was a 32nd Degree Mason of the West Branch Wapsinonoc Masonic Lodge No. 381, receiving his 50-year certificate last December. He was a member of the Scottish Rite Consistory, Kaaba Shrine, OES Jessamine Chapter No. 135 of Iowa City and a 50-year member of the Iowa City Moose Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Slach; children, Carol Belding of Coralville, Marcia Sorensen and husband, Spencer, of Burbank, Calif., Jane Slach and Mike Hill of Oxford, Raymond Slach and wife, Nancy, of West Branch, Anita Slach of Coralville, Susan Papke of Miles and Mark Naeve of Broomfield, Colo.; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister; a brother, Wayne; and two sons-in-law, Rand Papke and Leland Belding Jr.
IOWA CITY, Iowa - Joann Slach, 74, Iowa City, formerly of West Branch and West Liberty, died suddenly Wednesday, May 17, 2006, at her home.

Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 20, 2006, Henderson-Barker Funeral Home, 201 Pedersen St., West Branch. Burial will be at the West Branch Cemetery.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Friday, May 19, 2006, at the funeral home.

Mrs. Slach was born Dec. 27, 1931, in Waterloo, the daughter of Vaughn and Edith Frankford Owens. She married Arnold Slach on June 29, 1959, in Nashua.

She had been employed with the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, in the nutrition department and later at Simpson Memorial Home, West Liberty. She was a member of the Women of the Moose, Iowa City.

Survivors include her husband; a sister, Thelma Holmes and husband Richard of Marshalltown; and two brothers, Mike Owens and wife Donna of Lawson, Mo. and Dennis Owens and wife Dorothy of Neillsville, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Danny; and two sisters, Peggy Buchmayer and Dixie Trotter.
IOWA CITY, Iowa - Edwin F. Slach, 80, formerly of West Branch, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2007, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, following an extended illness.

Burial will be in the West Branch Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation.

Mr. Slach was born June 4, 1927, in Cedar County, the son of James and Bessie Lodr Slach.

He married Lela Stiff March 4, 1951, in Nashua.

He farmed for many years and later worked at the University of Iowa as a lab technician, retiring in 1989.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Iowa City and was a former volunteer fireman for the West Branch Fire Department.

He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Pam Quinlan of Des Moines, June (Tim) Hauck of
Marrietta, Ga. and Penny (Bill) Cummings of Central Square, N.Y.; a brother, Arnold Slach of Iowa City; a sister, Anna Clark of Iowa City; six grandchildren, Tricia, Chad and fiance, Jessica, Daniel, Laura, Kirsten and Kelly; and numerous nieces an nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Leonard.
