TECUMSEH — Max D. Gilpin, 65, of Tecumseh, died May 9, 2000, at home. He was born Aug. 21, 1934, in Camden, Mich., the son of James and Barbara Opal (Welch) Gilpin. On April 2, 1955, he married Edna Freshcorn in Angola, Ind.

He graduated from Camden High School in 1952 and served in the U.S. Army. Max retired from the Tecumseh Products Co. with 47 years of service. He was a member of the Camden United Methodist Church.

Max is survived by his wife, Edna; four children, Michael (Cathy) Gilpin of Tecumseh, Doug (Diane) Gilpin of Tecumseh, Scott (Chris) Gilpin of San Marcos, Calif., and Kelli Gilpin of Tecumseh; five grandchildren, Joy B., Jonathan, Kristen, Emily and Amy Gilpin; one brother, Robert (Ethel) Gilpin of Augusta, Ga., and three sisters, Janice (Aubrey) Gier of Camden, Peg (Elmer) Westfall of Montpelier, Ohio, and Sally Hicksenhiser of Camden. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Purse Funeral Home, Tecumseh, with the Rev. David McKinstry officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery, Tecumseh. Military Graveside Services will be conducted by the Tecumseh VFW. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Lenawee.

Max was a devoted husband and a loving, supportive father. His greatest joy was his five grandchildren. Max’s family would like all of his family and friends to know that Max did not succumb to cancer, he just ran out of time. He maintained his dignity, courage and honor to the very end.
