Associated Press

ODESSA,TX - Gary Lynn Watkins, a former state representative and district judge, has died following a battle with cancer. He was 57.

Watkins died Sunday following almost a month of treatments at Houston's M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Funeral services were scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church.

A state representative for six years, Watkins served most recently as judge for the 244th District Court. He was also a county judge from 1977 to 1982.

"He was very active in our legislature, and he remained active, and in my view, influential even up to today," State District Judge Bill McCoy told the Odessa American on Sunday.

McCoy said that the list of those who knew Watkins was long because he had been active in Ector County politics and in the Odessa community.

Watkins was also a supporter of all sports programs in the public schools, McCoy said.

Born in Crane in 1946, Watkins helped the University of Texas of the Permian Basin attain its status as a four-year school. He received numerous awards, including the Heritage of Odessa Foundation Award for government.

Watkins is survived by his wife, Hope Watkins of Odessa; sons, R. Trent Watkins and Travis Watkins, both of Dallas, and Grant Watkins of St. Petersburg; daughters Heather Watkins and Summer Roberson, both of Round Rock; and mother, Leona Watkins of Odessa.
