Looking for information on William Tennant (Tennent or Tynett), an indentured servant to Charles Gordon. Both arrived in Perth Amboy, New Jersey in late 1684 aboard the ship "Thomas and Benjamin". from Scotland. William was married to Mary Stillwell (Stillwille). Probably married after arriving in New Jersey. I have information from the New Jersey State Archives and the NEw Jersey Genealogical Society.

Bob Loyd

Re: Was Charles Anderson Strickland an indentured servant???

He shows up on the 1850 census in Tattnall County Georgia and his birthplace is listed as Tattnall.

I doubt if he was an indentured servant as in the south slavery had pretty much eliminated the interest in having indentured servants. The listing as "servant" in 1860 probably means that this was just an ordinary paid job.

Bearer Family Reunion Photo from 1929 in Carrolltown

The attached photo was taken by M.J. Farabaugh on Sept. 1, 1929. Not sure exactly where the photo was taken but it is presumed to be in Carrolltown. I am hoping Bearer family members can identify as many of the people in the photo. I have taken a stab at labeling a few people - some identified by relatives, others by matching with other photos on Ancestry.
If there is a better way to share this and identify people please make suggestions.
Was Charles Anderson Strickland an indentured servant???

HELP Please!!! I think I have a clue to the mystery that was my 3rd Great-Grand Father, Charles Anderson Strickland (1829-1902) I found that he listed his occupation as "servant" in a Georgia Census 1860. Charles and his wife, Tabitha "Matilda" Litha White, and several of their children:
Tabbitha Strickland age: 23
Matilda Strickland age: 1
Sarah Strickland age: 5
Martha Strickland age: 2
Soloman Strickland age: 3 months
Were listed in this census and the next one I found Charles lists his occupation as "farmer". How can I find where he came from? Found hints that list his birth as 30 JUL 1829 and found him on Find a Grave. I have a fourth cousin who has been searching for answers for 30 years?!! Please can ANYONE help!!! Thanks

Joseph Buhrer (later Bearer) arrived in Philadelphia with his wife Othilia and 3 children, all are recorded in the Farley Grubb book, arriving about Nov 27, 1817. They were contracted to a man named Woodbridge Odlin then those contracts were assigned to George Mower of Southampton Township, Cumberland County.
I am hoping to locate George Mower's farm, any information on Mr. Mower and any additional information of the Buhrer (Bearer) family and their length of servitude. Eventually Joseph and Othilia settled in Cambria County around 1840. I am trying to trace their journey from Philadelphia to Cambria between 1817-1840.

And sometimes they indentured themselves of their own free will to be able to take passage. Other times, parents indentured their children because they were too poor to keep the family together. No doubt some were kidnapped or stowaways but not all.

The southwest Rhineland is where the German Lutherans or Palatines fleeing their war torn land in 1709 would have come. The reason I think this person to be Palatine is the Dutch port used to leave Germany. Fleeing the Catholics by heading north to Protestant Netherlands would be the best route out of Germany. The southwest portion of the Rhineland I believe is directly south of the Netherlands. The Palatines were given land in New York state by the Mohawks or settled in the Limerick area of Ireland and a couple other locations.

Yes, it is true that people were kidnapped and brought to America. I ran across a Walter Merryman of a Presbyterian family from Ireland who was brought to America in the early 1700's. Going on memory from reading through books at the New England Historical & Genealogical Society in the 1980's in Boston, I believed that the ship needed sailors so he was taken from near the docks and then had to work 7 years to repay the Maine farmer who paid his passage. The other memory is that people stole away on ships and then were indentured to paid for passage.

Port of enrolment was Hull in England. His masters surname was Croft. I would like to know what ship he would have boarded and if there is anymore info about him on the enrolment records. Also, trying to find out if this is the same Herbert Edwin Rea who ended up living in Samoa for a few years and had a family in Samoa. Any information would be great.
Hi Thomas Arnot was the Master of the ship - Minerva. Philip did not actually stow away on the ship -- he "paid" for his passage by being indentured at the end of the voyage -- it was a common form of payment back then. Given the size of the ship and the number of passenger sold at the end of the voyage I am quite certain he was not a stow away.

If so those records probably won't be digital, so a long slog through probate records is in order. Some states have old court (listed under probate, court, adoption, guardian, will, etc.) listed by state, some by county, and some are individual towns and cities. Find out how Maryland lists it, by the address known, and there's your starting place. I'm on a kind of similar court records search in MA & RI. Good Luck!
Hi jacklyn,

The stow away part was the oral history and then written passed down through my grandfather Kenneth earl Reesman. He apparently was "caught" and that was how he ended up paying for his voyage. But I do understand that it was standard for this time. have you been able to find out where he was from in Germany?

Regards,

Charlene

Re: Status of Infants born to those indentured?

She could have been born to an indentured servant; that is quite possible. Also, her mother could have been a free person, but unmarried. It's also highly possible that a legal mention of your mother's binding exist in the county where this occurred. Each court book will have an index of names in the beginning, so look for this indenturing when she was born. It would take research at the courthouse itself, but I'd imagine would be very profitable.

Status of Infants born to those indentured?

My 7g grndmtr, born about 1750 in near Hagerstown Maryland, testifies she was "bound" as an infant to a Thompson household; and remained with that family until she married; she regarded the household as her (only) family.

She was white, European or caucasian - at least I think so. Could this mean perhaps she was born to an indentured person? Does anyone have any information on this circumstance; methods to try to identify her beginnings? Were such children censused in any way?

The need to prove her beginnings came up a Court of Common Pleas in the 1840's; two Thompson's of that household were deposed corroborating the same thing; she was bound as an infant to their father. Testimony implies she "chose" to stay with that family.

Her testimony vascilated on what her name might have originally been; she may have simply made up a maiden last name.

Any suggestions appreciated, thanks.

Do you know the time between your ancestor's arrival and her marriage? It's quite possible she skipped out on her service. I know that two of my female ancestors from Ireland who were supposed to serve "a year and a day", married men they met on the ship and never served any time. They arrived in Quebec, and lived in Buffalo. I don't know how ethical that was, but it was done!

Maybe she died in transit. Many did. A lot of those ships weren't much better than slave ships. The ship master had to make a profit off of carrying these servants and the more he could pinch a penny, the better off he was. Why should he care? He got paid up front.
