Status of Infants born to those indentured?

My 7g grndmtr, born about 1750 in near Hagerstown Maryland, testifies she was "bound" as an infant to a Thompson household; and remained with that family until she married; she regarded the household as her (only) family.

She was white, European or caucasian - at least I think so. Could this mean perhaps she was born to an indentured person? Does anyone have any information on this circumstance; methods to try to identify her beginnings? Were such children censused in any way?

The need to prove her beginnings came up a Court of Common Pleas in the 1840's; two Thompson's of that household were deposed corroborating the same thing; she was bound as an infant to their father. Testimony implies she "chose" to stay with that family.

Her testimony vascilated on what her name might have originally been; she may have simply made up a maiden last name.

Any suggestions appreciated, thanks.
