Sarah Jane Griffith was born the daughter of Sir Richard John Griffith and Maria Jane Waldie in Ireland about 1813. About 1825 she eloped with an estate gardener Robert Cooke and got herself disowned for her trouble! The couple fled Ireland and came to CANADA, Brockville in now Eastern Ontario. Robert and Jane Cooke raised 5 children including my great grandmother in Brockville but Robert Cooke died while the Cooke children were still pretty young about 1840. Letters to her wealthy Griffith parents were ignored so Jane farmed her Cooke children out to Robert Cooke's relatives in the area and she left Brockville with an American man, married him and remained in the USA until her passing. More children came of this second marriage and one of them did get in touch with his Cooke half brothers still living near Brockville I suspect 1880-90. I would hope that somebody in the USA will identify with this story. I do not know location or surname for the second marriage. There is no record in Brockville.
The half brother who did look up his Canadian half brothers did go to Ireland to try and straighten out his Griffith roots but he was apparently unsuccessful. Oh! for a name!!
