This is fascinating - it went on for months afterward with supposed sightings of the ship, and the wives of the captain and Tyrone Power were harrassed with hoax letters and even a crazy clairvoyant! The Captain, Lieutenant Roberts RN, had previously commanded the Sirius which was the first steamship to make a trans Atlantic crossing in 1838. Tyrone Power (an Irish actor) was apparently the great grandfather of the gorgeous 1930's/40's actor by the same name.
