You are right about the gun - it was introduced because the ball dropping could not always be seen due to fog, rain - just Edinburgh. The fastest train from Edinburgh to Glasgow Queen Street takes 49 minutes today, but you set me wondering about Leith-Edinburgh in the 19th century. Apparently there were 4 passenger stations at Leith until the 1950s. Leith Central and Leith Citadel built by the North British Railway, Leith North by the Caledonian Railway and South Leith built by the Edinburgh and Dalkeith Railway with carriages pulled by horses in 1831! Suppose it shows how important communication between the port and Edinburgh itself were and would certainly have been essential for the trans-migrant business. Anyway, you now know the poor devils did not have to face either Cape Wrath or the Irish Sea - and I would take a guess that it did not take much more than the hour, leaving out dis-embarking or changing in Edinburgh. Victorian trains were remarkably efficient.
