I am a direct decedent of someone who had a lobotomy by Dr. Walter Freeman sometime in the 1940's. I know she was institutionalized several times for suicide attempts as well. Mom doesn't know which hospital-but is almost positive it was the Alabama Insane Hospital, also known at Bryce Hospital. I have found that George Washington University has all of his papers, patient medical records, lectures, etc. The medical records are only available to surviving patients or their caretakers. My relative has been deceased 30+ years.
I am very interested in her medical records and even notes from her psychologists. I want to know what made her tick-and maybe get some insights in to her childhood. I thought if I could determine when she was treated by Freeman, I could track back her medical history. Where do I start? Is it generally common to have access to old deceased medical records?
