Ogima (chief) Black Powder was an Anishinabe (Ojibwa) ogima who may have lived in what is now the State of Montana, particularly the Great Falls region. His real name may have been Broken Arm. It is well known that Native Americans tended to have more than one name. Ogima Broken Arm signed the 1855 Stevens Treaties in Montana. Anishinabe people controlled nearly all of western North America at the time. Ogima Broken Arm was born around 1807. Here is the cover-up. According to ogima Big Bear's son, Little Bear, ogima Big Bear originally lived along the Snake River in southern Idaho. The Anishinabe people were driven out of that region after the January 29, 1863 Bear River Massacre. They fled up to southwestern Montana to continue the war against the invading whites. The Anishinabe people were especially fond of the Butte, Montana region. On January 23, 1877, the whites attacked the civilized Anishinabe town located at what is now the Great Falls, Montana region. They killed and wounded 1,000s of Anishinabe people there. They were mainly women and children. It is known as the Marias River Massacre. Ogima Big Bear was the main military ogimak of the Anishinabe Nation at the time (1877). He inherited the position in probably 1865 when his father ogima Black Powder or ogima Broken Arm, converted to Christianity. Ogima Broken Arm was probably killed by his own son for his disloyalty in 1869 and not 1865. Before his conversion, it is speculated that ogima Black Powder or ogima Broken Arm, scalped his wife alive and attempted to kill a man. He was obviously ill tempered, as were all soldiers of the Anishinabe military who are the Chippewa's or the Ojibwa. After the 1877 massacre, ogima Big Bear led his people up to Canada. The Seven Fires Prophecy is why he led the exodus. After losing the 1885 Northwest Rebellion, ogima Big Bear's son, Little Bear, led a large group of Anishinabek back to their original homeland (Montana) per his fathers instructions. Ogima Little Bear may have been the famous Crazy Horse. One of ogima Big Bear's sons had the name of Wild Horse. Ogima Little Bear was ill tempered.
