Black Cat Thicket...a densely wooded area north of Greenville and south of Wolfe City. Currently the area of Hunt County Road 4415 north to CR 4817. My records state that Chief Black Cat was a friendly Shawnee Indian. In 1844, Chief Black Cats' presence was requested by Sam Houston, president of the Republic of Texas, to attend a peace parley held near Waco, TX. Houston assembled the Chiefs of the Delawares, Shawnees and the Caddoes to talk of peace and peace treaties. All were Indian tribes of Hunt County, Texas and the surrounding counties.

Chief Black Cat was also known as quite an entrepreneur, engaging in the sale of moonshine whiskey, prostitution and gambling.

In a small open area on a hill top, called a "salt lick" (an area in which only grass grew...no trees. Currently the Tom Malone place) Chief Black Cat operated a horse race track known as "Devils Run". Many of the local settlers, travelers, other Indian tribes, and undesireable missfits would frequent the race track.

As more white settlers came into the county and wild game became scarce, Chief Black Cat moved his Shawnee tribe to the Indian Territory. Later, horse thieves and robbers used Black Cat Thicket to hide there loot. It was so dense and thick, snake infested and crawling with wolves, that the locals wouldn't even travel through it. The area was feared by most inhabitants. People had been known to disappear in the thicket.

Some notorious badmen...Jesse James and the Dalton brothers were known to camp in the thicket just south of Wolfe City, Texas.

As time went on and the area was more populated a school
was built ot the southwest corner of current Hunt County roads 4519 @ 4415 and the area was known as the Young community.
