MacKinnon Castles

Thank you John for taking on the admin job. I know it's not easy.

For some time the idea of restoring (or at least preserving) one of the MacKinnon castles on the Isle of Skye has intrigued me.

There are two, Dun Haakon (also known as Castle Maol - various spellings) and Dun Ringill/Ringoll.

Last year I discovered that the Board of Councillors has taken over the preservation of Dun Haakon and they have done a wonderful job of reinforcing the remaining walls, lighting the castle at night (it's a beautiful picture from Kyle of Lochalsh after dark!), and generally taking care of it.

The second castle, Dun Ringoll, is a brisk walk from Kilmarie kirkyard, overlooking Loch Slapin. There's not much left of it except a wonderful archway that may have once been a lookout for enemies aproaching by sea.

I believe the property on which Dun Ringoll sits is now owned by the John Muir trust. As you may be aware, the trust is doing a wonderful job of preserving and restoring forests and land of Scotland, but, so far as I know, it is no part of their mission to involve themselves in historical preservation.

Are there any folks out there besides myself who would be interested in participating in seeing that our oldest castle is preserved? I have written to the John Muir Trust, but received no answer (8 months ago).

Perhaps someone who resides in Scotland could help!
