You are incorrect on your knowledge of the name of Wilkinson and Clan Donald. There is historical records to back it up. Not for Wilkinson's of England but for McQuilkin,McCuilcean,McCuilkin etc;We were in Kintyre as early as 1539 when Duncan MAne Mcllchane was a witness, John Dow McWilkane was with the Clanranldbane in Largie when they received a parton in 1542 for not showing up at the battle of Solway. Even earlier there is Beanus Johannis McCuilquen Archdeacon of Sodor and the Isles 1390 he was from the Isle of Arran. The use of Wilkinson became widely used in the USA especially among the Cape Fear McQuilkins who emigrated from Kintyre ca 1770 from Kintyre. By the 1850 all were usinf the the English form of name.
In Kintyre they were mostly tenants of McAlistar of Loup and the McDonalds of Largie Duncan Mc Olchan died 1692 is buried in the McAlisters cemetary of Ballikill near Cuildrynoch in Kintyre is named on his stone as a tenant.
At this time also only two McQuilkins have DNA test, one from Rathlin Island appears to be a possible McKillican and the other is L21 Z242+with close matches from the border areas. So if your a McQuilkin from Rathlin Island, Kintyre and Islay and your folks Anglicized their name to Wilkinson please feel free to join Clan Donald, you belong.
