Hi Tenncelt !

Welcome to the Clan Hunter message board.

Although I am not descended from your Hunter ancestral line I have followed the discussions on this board, with great interest, because of the distinctive name Eliphalet Hunter. It is such a memorable name that I feel sure that someone will recognise the name in their pedigree and get in touch with you. I have great faith in the knowledge and wisdom of the people who read these postings.

In my experience, the biblical first names, Elijah and Israel, do not sound to be either Scottish, Irish or English in origin. I wonder if this is a useful research clue? If I may hazard a guess - I would say that your Hunter ancestors may, originally have been, Jaegers (or Yaegers) possibly from, a religeous sect, fleeing persicution, in Switzerland, Austria, or Southern Germany, and the name became 'Hunter' when the family took the oath of Allegiance as Naturalised Citizens of the USA'. But I would suggest that this is only a personal suggestion. I do not have any evidence to support the idea. On the other hand 'Thomas' is a common name in England, and I have several Thomas's (and even female Thomasin's in my English Hunter pedigree. It is much rarer in Scotland and Ireland.

I would be very interested to hear if anyone responds, to your query and to learn how your research progresses.

Good luck!

Brian Hunter
