At one of those cheesy Celtic festivals, I read in a book that "Galloway" is an alias, that some MacFarlane assasinated an earl in the 1300s, and after that the clan had to lay low. Galloway was one of the aliases they adopted. Don't know if that's accurate. But of course, Galloway is the largest province in Scotland, home of the beloved Robbie Burns.
I'm only a first-generation American; both sides of my family are from Scotland, including my father, George, who was raised in Kirkcaldy. His father, Andrew, was a master woodcarver who did the fancy, carved woodwork on the Mauritania and the Lusitania, which were THE luxury liners before the Titanic (both ended up at the bottom of the ocean, much to his dismay.)
He came over here to work on the renovation of the interior of St. Patrick's Cathedral in the 1920s, then settled in Cleveland. There, he created the Cleveland Liturgical Arts Guild, a bunch of carvers who did much of the beautiful work that can still be found in the old churches and cathedrals in the Cleveland area.
My branch of the Galloways are noted for tall guys, over 6 feet. When I lost my dad in the crowd in Edinborough, I soon caught sight of him, a head taller than all the (typically) short people in Scotland.
