Dear Cousin Peter:

In actuality, the Boyd family is a noble house, rather than a Highland clan. We are known as the House of Boyd, officially. However, we are commonly called Clan Boyd. The Lord Lyon also refers to Lord Kilmarnock as the Chief of the Boyd clan. You will find us listed in the Clans and Families Encyclopaedia, by George Way of Plean and Romily Squire. [nice men -- I met them a few years ago.]

There are three tartans and the modern is more readily available than the ancient. There is a Boyd Family Tartan, Boyd Clan Tartan and the Ancient Boyd. Neither is very old. Lord Kilmarnock, our Chief, had them designed and registered in the 1950s. They are based on the Stewart Hunting and the Hay tartans, which reflect his lineage. Prior to this time, Boyds only had the Stewart tartan to wear. It is still within protocol for us to wear most all of the some 66 Stewart tartans.

House of Boyd has had an organization formed to support clan activites, historical and genealogical endeavors for the clan/family since October 15, 1988. Correspondence to begin this effort was initiated years prior our first meeting at Stone Mountain Georgia. Our name, House of Boyd Society, was suggested by Lord Kilmarnock, as he was uncomfortable with the term "clan", at that time. He did not feel it truly applied to us as he felt it did to the Stewarts. He has since relented in that position. We retain the name to honor our Chief's wishes and have no intention of changing it.

Our Historian, Mike Boyd, of Australia, would be pleased to hear from you. He has been tracking the migration of the Boyds for well over 20 years. He recently returned from a research trip to Northern Ireland, Scotland and England. Although he still has much work to do in order to add all the new records into his current system, he is keeping up with correspondence fairly well. You can contact him at

Please join us on the Boyd discussion list. It is the oldest Boyd discussion group online. We began with peer to peer discussion and then a group send list, then more formally via fido net, moved on to Maiser listserv and when they got spam bombed, we moved the group here to Rootsweb. We have had the list hosted by Rootsweb since 1996. There are hundreds of Boyds, Boyd descendants and researchers subscribed. Due to our history, the topic is a bit broader than most Rootsweb lists. We are a community. And members will want to know if you have red hair or celtic toes! <g> ....some threads never truly die.

I have attached graphics for you to see: 1) Letter from Lord Kilmarnock to our Society's Founder and current Editor of our award winning Newsletter "The Dean Road"tm, Joe Boyd Williams; 2) 3 graphic files showing the Boyd tartan. The Ancient may not be as true as the others, but it is the graphic at hand.

As you are only in the Westen Isles... you may want to plan a weekend holiday to our Ancestral home in Kilmarnock. Dean Castle is located in Dean Park just at the north end of town. Do make mention that you are a Boyd and they will give you the "royal treatment" and a special tour.

We also have roots on the Isle of Bute and connections with history all over Scotland. There are many Castles and strongholds that were once the property of the Boyds. And it is the Boyds that are responsible for the Orkney and Shetland Islands being part of Scotland, rather than Denmark.

Yes, Peter, the Boyds have a rich history. One as old as Scotland and one to be proud of. It is said that all Boyds are related. There is a Boyd DNA Project that the House of Boyd sponsors and acknowledges. You are welcome to join it as well to see which branch you may connect to.

Should you have interest in joining our clan's organization, we would be pleased to hear from you in that regard as well.

Yours Aye,

Lauren M. Boyd, FSA Scot
