Re: Baltic Germans -- history of surname Ziugmann

Surnames: Ziugmann
During the Russian Tsar period in 1800's, Estonia or Livonia / Livland was governed by Baltic German nobility, who lived in large Manor Houses on their estate. Estonian peasants were used as their farm workers or serfs.

I have read that prior to 1750(?) the peasants were called by their first names only. After 1750(?), the landlord of the Manor House gave each "head of the family" (male) a surname.

I am interested in knowing the history of my father's surname Ziugmann. His ancestors lived near Räpina or Rappin, in southern Estonia.

I request your help.
