YOUNGSTOWN – Mrs. Virginia D. Covington, 81, went to eternal rest on May 3, 2013.
Mrs. Covington was born March 4, 1932, in Wake Forest, North Carolina, a daughter of Alfonso Speed and Odell Bullock Thorpe, and was reared by Wilson and Roberta Dewar.
She had been employed at North Side Hospital, Youngstown, Ohio in Central Processing Department.
She had attended the Greater Friendship Baptist Church until illness prevented her from attending.
While at Greater Friendship, she served in the Mother’s Board, Usher and Willing Workers Ministries. She loved her family dearly.
She leaves to cherish her memory, two daughters, Gloria Gray of Youngstown and Cathy Covington-Traylor of Columbia, S.C.; a son, Sherwood Covington of Youngstown; a stepdaughter, Kay Lyons of Richmond, Va.; five brothers, Robert Thorpe, John, Alfonso, Graham and James Speed; six grandchildren, Craig Lyons, Kevin Calwise, Katryna Gray, Candace Fields, Chadajah and Caden Robinson; two great-grandchildren, Takaysha Gray and Malaya Calwise; and a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
Besides her husband, James D. Covington, she was preceded in death by her birth parents and the parents who reared her; a stepson, Carl Seldon; and siblings Alberta Moody and Robert Speed.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday May 10, 2013, at the L.E. Black, Phillips and Holden Funeral Home.
Friends may call one hour prior to the services from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
