The LEWIS Surname DNA Project enrolled their 161st member yesterday!

All male biological LEWISES or variant surnames (LUCE, LEWS, etc.) are invited to join the project. There are NO fees other than the cost of your genetic tests, which are sharply discounted for group members.

The LEWIS Surname DNA Project, one of the larger DNA surname projects, was created in 2003 as a nonprofit organization to develop a collection of various Lewis family groups who descend from the same male Lewis ancestor. DNA analysis of the Y chromosome, carried exclusively by males, provides a tool for identifying participants who share a common male ancestor; and, when used in unison with documented Lewis pedigrees, can also aid in establishing links between Lewis groups who previously were thought to be unrelated.

Because many Lewis surname researchers have exhausted traditional genealogy research methods without identifying their elusive Lewis ancestor, this project combines genetics and genealogy in an effort to break through the proverbial "brick wall".

The Y Chromosome is passed down from father to son virtually unchanged for hundreds of years. Tiny mutations do occur and it is these tiny mutations which geneticists call markers that enable family reconstructions such as are now occuring at testing companies such as Family Tree DNA, Relative Genetics and Oxford Laboratory of England. Group rates may be obtained for family reconstruction projects and some labs even store the submitted samples for a number of years years at no cost to the participants. This enables additional tests to be done as they become available.

The Y chromosome has been studied intensely and divided into haplogroups, based upon the results of the number of alleles in certain positions called markers. These "markers" have been chosen for their demonstrated ability to predict the haplogroup of the tested individual.

Knowing your haplogroup will provide you with some knowledge of your deep history as well as aid in finding related individuals.

All and all it is a fun and fascinating voyage of discovery. Order now and you should have your results by Christmas. Makes a great gift also.
