Sweeney DNA Surname Project
Anyone with the Sweeney surname, or with any of the numerous spelling variations derived from the original Mac Suibhne, is invited to join the project.
The goals of the project include using Y DNA to help members discover their Sweeney paternal lineage, finding Y DNA evidence of the Fanad, Doe, and Banagh branches, and proving or refuting decent from an Irish prince of the O’Neill dynasty.
The Y chromosome is only passed from a father to his male children, generation after generation, without any DNA from the mother. The mutations that occur over these generations allow us to compare the DNA of two men that share a surname to see if they descend from a common ancestor.
While this is a Y DNA project Autosomal DNA testers are welcome. But only Y DNA testing will allow us to meet all of our goals.
