Dear Mr. Yates,

I am researching the Oben / Oven / Owen family line in the Caribbean. My maternal grandfather was Jose Alejandro Owen Alvares, from Ponce, Puerto Rico.

A family tree of the Victorias of Santo Domingo, denoted as Jews from France, Belgium of northern Spain in some sources, shows that they intermarried with the Owens, from St. Martin or Curacao.

Please read my posting of 18 May, 2004 regarding that family.

Have you come across any relevant research on the subject of Welch / Scottish / Irish living in the Virgin Islands circa 1700 or about two decades later, who were Jews? I have in the past found a Gloria Owen as part of a failed Quaker settlemen in Martinique, mid 19th century.

To share what I have that is new, the "coqui" website has a list of immigrants in the 1820s to Puerto Rico, including Oppenheimers, Wagners, Armstrongs, Obem.
