The points in your first sentence are certainly valid. Unfortunately, FTDNA is not accepting results from the new v4 chip at 23andMe, which reduced the amount of overlap with FTDNA's chip. If your test was processed after the middle of December, 2013, it is probably v4. FTDNA is evaluating the possibility of accepting v4 results in the future.

The price differential isn't as big as it used to be, when FTDNA was charging $289 (from memory). The regular price of a transfer is $69, so if you really want to "fish in all three ponds", it doesn't cost much more to pay for a test at 23andMe. The medical reports are currently embargoed due to FDA actions, but they may come online in the future if 23andMe gets FDA approval. However, you can evaluate your raw data with a third party utility such as Promethease or study the SNPs used in various reports and look up your SNP result.
