Which tests? Which strategy should I use?

What additional tests should I take? Anyone have suggestions about how to achieve my objective?

Background: I am new at this. I have my 12 marker National Geographic Genographic Project results and have submitted them to Family Tree, entered them into Ysearch, subcribed to the list, and poked around the internet, slowly getting familiar with this subject.

Objectives: My objective is to verfiy/validate my pedigree, which was carefully prepared by my father over a twenty year period, prior to his death. His work goes back a very long time. He traces my lineage to the Battle of Hastings, 1066, and to Kings Royal and, by connection, to other blood lines, to 700 AD.

My mother and father were 6th cousins. Though no Cushman (my surname) came on the Mayflower, my father reports that I am descended from 11 of the 23 lines listed as descendants of Mayflower passengers.

I do not find a Cushman surname project; however, I have found a distant male cousin, but with a different surname, with whom I have a common ancestor, who was born in 1656. Is there a testing approach that would determine our common lineage through DNA testing? If so, which tests should he and I order?

I am R1b (M343) and though I have searched Ysearch and Ybase, and a few other databases, I do not find an exact match, even on my 12 markers. I found a very small number with one alle variation at one marker, and a few at two markers, but these subjects do not share my surname. It seems unlikely that testing for 25 or 37 markers will produce a match.

FYI, my Genographic Project scores are: 393=13; 19=15; 391 =10; 439 = 12; 389-1 = 12; 389-2 = 16 (Which I entered as 29 in FTDNA); 388 = 12; 390 = 25; 426 = 12; 385a = 11; 385b = 15 & 392 = 13.

Should I get additonal testing for 25 or 37 markers? Should I get mtaDNA testing, too?
Any suggestions for a genetic testing strategy to validate my pedigree? Suggestions welcome.
