I believe that Tath Borden was a member of Quantrill's Raiders. My Grandmother was Fern Borden and she married into the Peterson family. Her father was Will Borden. I do not believe that Will Borden was a member of Quantrill's Raiders.

My Grandmother told a story of how the Union army came to my Great Great Grandfather's farm and took the horses. My Great Grandfather Will had received a horse for his birthday. They were in the process of taking his horse and he began to cry. One of the Union soldiers reached into his pocket and took out a silver dollar and gave it to my Great Grandfather Will.

The Union army was trying to catch Tath. He was a member of Quantrill's Raiders. They knew that he was in the area visiting. They took one of the teenage boys working on the farm and asked him where Tath was. The boy said that he did not know. They asked him several times and the boy said nothing. The troops began to leave the farm when one of the neighbors, who sympathized with the Union army, turned and shot the boy in the head. The women in the cabin saw the shooting and took the boy into the cabin. The union troops set fire to the cabin.

The boy died but the women survived and told the story. After the war several of the returning Confederate soldiers went to the cabin of the man who shot boy. They took him out and hanged him. My Grandmother knew the name of the man who was hanged, but she would not tell it. She thought it was best to forgive that family. They were still living in that area.

After the war, Tath went to Texas. Most of the Quantrill's men left Missouri. Those that stayed were treated as outlaws and were hanged if they surrendered.

My Grandmother told about the old Borden men getting together in Missouri in the early 1900's. They told their war stories and the kids listened. She said that you kept your mouth shut and listened. They were a tough old bunch of survivors.

I am glad to hear that Tath has a family. Please tell me how you are related.

Thank you
Kurt Peterson
