Well, its not entirely impossible. The states do border each other and its not really hard to see a family being tallied on one state census, picking up and moving, arriving in a new location just in time for the new state census. Just for kicks, make certain that the 2 census records are containing identical families. It is common to find same names for husband, wife, kids, birth dates and even nicknames - all to crash down when the birth locations reveal differences, and if this were in the 1860s-1880s it was very common for the slaves to take on the names of the owners - the sons, daughters, wives, and husbands. The only way to tell the families apart was the race tab in the census. The families all lived in the same town, same time period and the ages were not always exact. You may even have 3 generations of the same names repeating.
