Good day,

Like other listers, I'm having trouble determing what German records actually exist, and where they are located. If this material is filmed and available in the LDS catalogues, I can't seem to find it there.

I would appreciate any direction on where to find census or vital records for the following:

Carl (or Karl) Vester, born 02 February 1862, and his wife Wilhelmina (Minna) Gatterfeld (various anglicized spellings known), born 18 June 1867. They likely married prior to 1886. Their first three children were born in Germany: Emil Ernest(b.24 Aug 1886), Walter Oscar (b. 31 May 1888) and Fritz (b. 03 May 1891). The family emigrated out of Hamburg to Canada in 1893. The Ship's manifest states they were living in Forderstedt, which appears to be a village on the outskirts of Stassfurt (in Saxony area, southwest of Berlin). This is my starting point for searching records.

There is some thought that Carl Vester may have been a coal miner in a place called Hoxter at one point, therefore the family may have lived there too.

The family's religion is given in Canadian census data as Lutheran.

Traveling with them on the ship to Canada is Minna's widowed mother, Dorothea Gatterfeld, and possibly a 16-year old son named Willi. (Dorothea's husband may have been Abilberti Gatterfeld, of Danish or Swedish descent). Another son, Emil Gustav Gatterfeld, was a professional musician, and emigrated from Barman to New York City in 1898.

Does anyone have suggestions for my search on the Vester and Gatterfeld surnames in Germany?

Kind regards,
