I urge people, who have relatives at the State Street Burial Grounds which are now located at Albany Rural Cemetery, to actually travel there and look for the gravestones of their ancestors. My search for my ancestor found his nearly 100 year old gravestone in quite good condition despite lying face up since 1868 when it was taken to Albany Rural. Most of the gravestones I examined had much more extensive inscriptions than the Common Council records show. In a few cases, more people were listed on the individual stones than were shown in the records. Also there are discrepancies between the actual inscriptions and the records. While the search will be difficult as the stones are often covered with grass and mud as a result of lying flat, the search could be very worth while.
