Thank you so much for this. It certainly increases my store of knowledge and will enable me to visit the graves when I am next in the vicinity of the cemetery.
Just by way of comment, William Henry Golding seems to be one of the few Goldings who can't easily be linked to his English forbears. An exercise book dating from around the 1850s shows him as "William Golding, Goudhurst, Kent", but I can't link him with the other Goldings from Goudhurst. I thought he might have moved there, as family information suggested he might have been born in Devon, but I am inclined to think that the headstone must be correct. The information that came from my grandmother (who was his granddaughter) was that William's parents died young and that he was raised by a rich aunt, Dora Sherson Smithe (after whom his daughter Dora Sherson Golding was named), butI haven't as yet been able to trace William's parents or Dora Sherson Smithe.
Anyway, thanks again for your help - much appreciated.
