At the risk of getting caught in the crossfire, I'll make a comment and pose a question. First the comment: When I first became involved in genealogy research as a college student, one of the things that I really appreciated was the collaborative spirit and the chance to get to know friendly and welcoming people. Now, coming back to the hobby/avocation 25+ years later, after having worked as a banker and as a professional historian, I've found that the sense of community has been considerably diminished. That's a real loss. Now the question/s: Does the rudeness, snarkiness and plain old lack of common courtesy that seems to prevail on ANCESTRY (and elsewhere) reflect the general coarsening of a society that no longer has much respect for old values, or is it more directly a function of the annonymity and the lack of real connection that defines the online environment? Why is the nastiness more prevalent on sites like ANCESTRY than in other venues I frequent?
I welcome thoughtful and civil comments .....
