I also find hints very valuable but anyone needs to use common sense when looking at hints. I usually go looking to see if someone has a spouse listed for someone I am researching and then I start looking for other sources to prove it. Never just attach a part of another persons tree willy nilly. Looking at a line I was researching last night, I discovered that one person had 5 different trees all with the same information. It was not that the informaion might be bad but it was the dates that were entered in each of the 5 trees that were then picked up by others. For virtually all the persons I looked at, the 5 trees had for example: John Smith-birth between 1850 & 1950-death between 1900 & 2000 and virtually all the people in this persons trees were done the same exact way and the others who picked up those hints got the same nonsensical dates. I am not exagerating the date ranges either, only the names were changed. To me this is a very, very bad way to enter dates. Use hints wisely and then work to prove the hints before manually entering the data.
