I figured out how to "remove" lines on the pedigree poster if you have blank areas

Step 1 - Mask the area with a "blank" text box.

- Choose one of the more evenly toned backgrounds (a single solid color or parchment type background with edge shading is OK, but pattern probably won't work)

- Make a text box. Place it over the where you want to cover up chart lines. Type into it to make it larger (you can adjust font sizes to not have to type so much) Don't worry that you can see the text and the line - just get it sized right.

- In the properties toolbar for the text box, click the option to have this box be "on top" of everything else.

Step 2 - Now adjust the colors of the text box

- Choose a solid background for your text box. Set the background color of the text box to match the background of your poster. Use the color picker (eye dropper) to select the background color of your poster.

- Set your font color to that same background color and now you have a plain square that blends right into the background of the poster.

You can still float a photo overtop the text box, just be sure to choose to have the photo be on top so that the text stacks on top of the blank line and the photo stacks on top of your masking text box.

You may have to play with it and test it with "print to PDF" and print previews to be sure you don't have hard square edges of the text box showing up. if you do, then you must have a varied tone background. You may want to choose another background or try picking a slightly different color from the background for your text box and font.
