Ancestry inserts Place of Last Residence/Last Benefit Payment into the Place of Death field in my Ancestry tree whenever I pull down information about a relative from the US Social Security Death Index (SSDI). So I have to change each record to remove the errant place of death information because the SSDI does not document place of death. If my relative dies in a hospital out of town, SSDI will offer that person's normal place of residence and Ancestry will plug it into my tree as where he/she died. If my relative is in a nursing home and their adult child is tending to their Social Security payments and pays their bills, SSDI will show that place and Ancestry will pull that place into my tree as the subject's place of death. You must realize by now that this is unsatisfactory. Is there any hope that this will be fixed? I submitted a trouble ticket to Ancestry about a year ago and the reply was that it is a place of death field and nothing will be changed. Ancestry does miraculous things, but this SSDI issue is a nagging problem. I see incorrect places of death asserted in countless records as a result. I found a 2010 entry complaining of this in these message boards. It would be better, albeit not correct either, to record these data as Residence and apply the month and year of death to the residence. It wouldn't be perfect, but it would be better than corrupting the place of death field.
