I am no novice to computers and internet sites, but it never would have occurred to me to click the logo, while on the site, to get to a home page. So, sorry but I really don't think it's going to be obvious that one needs to do that.
But, if we are losing the home page tab, maybe these folks who have time on their hands can restore the link that used to be on every , or virtually every, page while doing a search from a profile ( "return to John Smith"). The removal of that link was what prompted me to start using the "home" tab very frequently.
I also agree with the observation that these changes are being made by people who don't experience the site as users. Personally, I think it would be beneficial if all changes to the user's experience (not just behind scenes stuff) were made only by people who had at least ten hours of site use creating a small tree and doing actual research - I think it would create a very different perspective.
