My grandmother-in-law was born in Michigan to a Bertha "Casner" Brown (the maiden name may be wrong) and Jay Brown. When she was very small her mother died of the flu that was brought over by soldiers in WW1. She and her brothers and sisters were farmed out to neighbors because her father could not take care of them. There may have been two or three children who died at birth. There may have been twins in that because Bertha herself had a twin with the married name of "Carrick." The girls were reportedly half Native American. We don't know what nation and would like to find out.
