Gladys was born in Kentmere-Windermere, England on May 4, 1920, to Nora Annie Longmire Burton and Ralph Albert Burton and was one of seven children.

Gladys came to the United States with her family in 1923, entering through Ellis Island. The family then settled in Great Bridge, Va., where Gladys graduated from Kempsville High School. She then studied pre-nursing at Mary Washington College for two years and went on to the St. Vincent DePaul School of Nursing in Norfolk, Va., where she graduated two years later as a registered nurse.

Col. Edward Roberts, an attorney from Youngstown, Ohio on April 16, 1945, in Paris, France. They met on an Army base in Iceland in 1943.

After the war, Gladys and her husband returned to the United States and settled in Edward’s hometown, Youngstown, where they lived, worked and raised a family.

Gladys was dedicated to her family, her church and her community. She was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church and Church Women United.
She always was very involved in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Brownies and Girl Scouts as her children were growing.
