I've known the story of your cousin for thirty years. It was part of our family lore. Lucia Calcagni was my Great Aunt. Her married name was Lucia Simonelli. She eventually emigrated to Canton, OH, to join her husband, John Simonelli.
She risked the ire of her German occupiers to bury your cousin's body after his plane came down in her field just outside Arce, Italy. When challenged why she had done so, she replied "Because he is some mother's son."
If you have not since found the details of the story, kindly contact me on firstname.lastname@example.org
and I will put you in touch with my cousin Phil who has researched the story. It is because of his research that I just this morning learned the name of the American pilot who my great aunt buried in her field.
