Probably the best place to start would be sending away for his service records, and seeing if anyone in your family has his original discharge papers. You can check newspaper obituaries for information on his service if no family members remember. Also the cemetery he was buried at and the local tax collector/town clerks office may have a copy of his discharge papers on file. That's an important document as it will list his last duty assignment, and medals he had been awarded at the time of seperation and his rank and service number. Here's a link on how to go about requesting serice records. Without information on where he served and with what unit, it's almost impossible to even begin to flesh out his service.
