I have been trying to find any record of my 2nd great grandfathers time in the military, but I only have his name a one photograph to go on.
I was wondering if anyone saw the photo would they be able to tell the apprx. year the photo was taken based on his uniform? Or even what war he was involved in? I am convinced it was pre-WW1 based on what I know of the uniforms from that period, but am at a loss as to anything else.
No-one I am in contact with in the family knows anything about his military career so I wonder if maybe he just dressed up for the photo, but this seems very unlikely.
His name is William James Smith. This photo was apparently taken in Nelson, NZ but no one knows the date. I believe he was in the New Zealand army as he was married, lived and his children born in the Tasman area of NZ. I cannot begin to guess a date as I am unfamiliar with NZ army pre-WW1, but I assume it would be late 1890s - early 1900s.
Sorry it's not much to go on. Any help, no matter how small, will be greatly appreciated.
