I have often wondered why there are no posts in the divorce records thread!
From doing extensive research into divorces before the 1940's (I have great grandparents who were divorced in 1925, and have wondered if the records would give me any insight into why she(gr grandma) disappeared shortly beforehand), I have discovered that "back then" divorces were granted for one of two reasons- Abondonment, and Adultery.
In New York state, where I live, and also, my great grandparents divorce was granted, I would have to have a special dispensation to view and read their records. I decided that it was highly unlikely that their divorce named a possible third party, I believe that my great grandmother likely left the marriage voluntarily for someone else, and that it wouldn't be worth the possibly hundreds of dollars spent by me to find that the grounds for divorce were likely both abandonment and adultery.
For what it's worth though, not knowing what state your divorce was granted in, I think you should thoroughly research the laws in your state, then decide.
If you decide to pursue it, please post here, maybe someone else who is looking and unsure what to do will see it.
Good luck hunting,
Brenda
