I am a descendant of Jonas/Johannes Letterman/ Leatherman/Leathermon b July 12, 1792, N.C., into an old Dunkard family out of Pennsylvania who had moved to N.C. following the end of the first Cherokee War before the Revolution. Jonas married a Hughes woman whose first name is variously spelled as Allyfedous/Alphedue/Alfreda/ Alphaeus who was b ca 1800 (possible dates July 1 1800 or January 5 1803), probably in NC. They were married in Burke Co., N.C., April 9, 1814. Their son and my forebear Israel was born January 26, 1825, Buncombe Co., NC. The family moved through TN and KY to IN and finally to MO.
I am a bit conufused about where the family Bible of the Hughes is found referring to them as Dunkards, but it would seem likely that they are my ancestors. Is there anything in that Bible referring to a marriage to anyone with a patronymic sounding similar to Letterman or a female Hughes born in the very early 1800s with a name anything like that of my maternal Hughes forebear? Of course, if there is a certain connection between my maternal Hughes and your Hughes family, I would be very interested in learning anything I can of my immediate maternal Hughes forebear and any of her ancestors.
