Gracie,

My middle name is Grace and I was named after my paternal grandmother, Mable Grace Sanders (b 1899). Her father was named David S. Sanders whose father was Joseph S. Sanders (b 1844). Joseph S. had a brother named William Benjamin (b 1829). I have their parents as Joseph (b 1798) and Emily Sanders (b 1808) both born in South Carolina. I have Joseph and William B.'s father as John Sanders b. 1779 in SC and d there in 1832. His wife's name was Elizabeth but don't know her last name, From what I could find she was a seamstress who lived to be 105. I show that John had 3 brothers, Moses, William (bn 1765) and Nathanial, but not sure if this is right - I've found conflicting info.

My father and grandfather's name was Ocie Oats and daddy always said he was named after Chief Oceola. I always thought he was pulling my leg but that there was some American Indian in my history. Daddy and Daddy Penton were small men but were really dark skinned with black hair. I've been trying to find the connection and maybe this grandmother that went west on the trail of tears is it but if so, how did they end up back in the south. All the kids were born in the Edgefield district of SC. Maybe it was a grandmother's sister. Sanders is such a "common" name (as opposed to Penton - my maiden name) that it's hard to sort out.

Anyone have anymore info on the Sanders women?
