The story as Id always heard it was that James Patton and David Crockett had become friends while serving together in the Creek Indian War, and that James Patton died during the War, so when it was over David Crockett came to Buncombe County to find his friend's widow and tell her about her husband's last days, and that romance bloomed between them...

A while back I read a book by the grandson of WW II's Gen. George S. Patton III. The original Goerge S. Patton, the WW II General's grandfather, had been Colonel of the 22d Virginia (CSA) and was killed at the Third Battle of Winchester in the fall of 1864. Also on the field that day was some portion of Thomas's Legion from WNC. This book, as it was by a family member, went into some genealogical detail, and there were some interesting bits related about "Patton" as a name in early America. Apparently "Patton" was a surname adopted by supporters of Bonnie Prince Charlie, who had had to flee to the colonies after the attempt to put him on the throne failed. For some reason many of these families adopted the name "Patton", supposedly so that they might recognize one another as friends. Ive never seen such a theory advanced about our WNC Pattons, and wondered if anyone has.
