Here are my notes on John, Peter's son:

John was born in Scotland, probably Glenmoriston, Inverness-shire. According to John's land petition, he came to New York in 1773 to settle on Sir William/John Johnson's land in the Mohawk River Valley. He joined the Royal Standard at Skeensborough now called White Hall [New York]. He was a prisoner about three months before that period at Saratoga and came under Allan McDonell's command to Canada in 1780. His petition was recorded on Sep 10, 1816. Recorded as John Bane Grant.

His original petition filed on Feb 7, 1803. This petition says that he is the son of Peter Grant, a U.E. Loyalist. It also states that he is living on Lot 10 on the Front.

I have the Abstract for Lot 10 on the Front. Peter to Duncan, Duncan to John and John to Peter Jr. John to Peter Jr. transaction was dated 6/16/1845. We know from Peter (John's oldest son and my ancestor) filed a petition for land as the son of a Loyalist in 1843 and John was alive and approximately 80 years old at that time.

St. Andrew Presbyterian Chirch, Williamstown,Ontario Baptisms and Marriages from 1779-1804 by Alex W. Fraser, Rhoda Ross 1999 reports the following births:
Pg. 91, Katharine Grant Daughter of John Grant of Charlottenburg and Margaret Grant his wife, was baptised on the 1st November 1794. John Bethune
Pg 102, Nelly Grant, daughter of John Grant of Charlottenburg and of Margaret _____ his wife, was baptised on the 9th March 1796.
Pg 147, Margaret Grant, daughter of John Grant of Charlottenburg andof Margaret Grant his wife, was born on the 11th and baptised on the 14th March 1802.
Pg 168, James Grant, son of John Grant of Charlottenburg and of Margaret Grant his wife, was born ont he ________ and baptised on the 25th March 1804.

John Grant is buried in the Salem United Church in Summerstown, Glengarry, Canada. He is buried with his first wife, Margaret Grant, his second wife, Flora Grant, and his daugher Nelly Grant. The dates on the tombstones don't agree with what I believe to be true. I don't think that they have been transcribed correctly. John was born about 1863 and he is married to Margaret. According to Margaret's tombstone, she died Aug 18, 1806 aged 59 years. I think that she was 39 years old. She would have been quite a gal having been nearly 20 years older than John. Also, Nelly, their daughter's tombstone states she died Dec 20, 1828 aged 52 years. This would mean that John was approx 11 when she was born. If you consider the dates in the St. Andrews Baptism and Marriage book, the date works out perfectly for Nelly's birth.

I hope to apply for UEL status for these soldiers!
