To clarify the issue, the colonial names which came to Avoyelles including Dupuis, were not the Acadian names which were deported in the mid 1700s. Most of the Avoyelles families came to Biloxi, New Orleans, Mobile or Pointe Coupee in the 1720s, long before the Acadians arrived in Louisiana. The families were hard working middle class families with trades. Many had owned property in Europe, but were enticed by the John Law advertising to come to the new world for riches. It was the children, grandchildren of these 1720s pioneers to Louisiana who made their way to the high prairie of Avoyelles in the 1780s, following the great Mississippi River flood of 1780 which devastated Pointe Coupee.

The Acadians were not deported from France, but were sent their by a land lord, a seignor (sp?), who owned land in Nova Scotia.
