THEODORE W. MERTENS ONCE WEALTHY 'ICE KING' DIES AT 75

Succombs After Illness of Several Years - Funnel Services Tomorrow

Theodore W. Mertens 75 years old, an ice and coal dealer, who once was wealthy, died yesterday at his residenc, 1512 Cora Avenue, following an illness of several years.
In 1921m at a hearing at City Hall, at which he unsuccessfully sought additional compensation for property damage caused by the breaking of a sewer in 1906. Mertens exhibited old newspaper clipping describing hom as the "Ice King of St. Louis." He declared he was penniles, although he once had been worth $500,000.00. He was seeking money to re-establish himself in the ice business, his plant at Fifteenth and Branch streets having been lost two years previously through bankruptcy. He said he had paid the city a total of $150,000. in wwater bills and taxes during his 50 years in business,
Mr. Mertens is survived by his widow, four sons and one daughter. Funeral services will be held at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow from the residence to Holy Ghost Church, with interment in Calvary Cemetery.
