Thanks for your post, I wasn't aware of this variation on the surname. The numerous spellings led me to wonder about this cold case file in my lineage: my dad was one of 10 kids from the Gottschee region and they immigrated over to north america -- the eldest child was first to come over but never heard from again. They presumed him deceased during passage. At one point, before electronic records, a private investigator was hired to resolve the mystery, which I think didn't yield much. There isn't any evidence to suggest one way or another if he was estranged and plotting the numerous variations on the spelling is the only starting I can think of to see if the database records have truly been exhausted.

Of course, logic would dictate that this missing Vertatschitsch, if he survived, could have more easily sought out his kin than the other way around and the fact that this has never transpired is evidence enough that he passed -- but still, it's an interesting tangent to explore and some consider it unresolved.

Also, my grandfather had a brother who came over in the early 1900s and was lost in the history books. Same mystery. If we were to locate this individual, that would be paydirt in terms of pulling our tree together.
