GATE CITY, Va. - Carl B. Poff, 71, of the Wadlow Gap community, went to be with the Lord early Sunday morning (Nov. 24, 2002) at his residence after a long illness.

Born in Scott County, Va., he was a son of the late Simon and Trula Lemmons Poff and was of the Baptist faith. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in Europe as a military policeman and worked in law enforcement in Arizona and California. Mr. Poff retired from Holston Defense in 1991.

He was bestowed an honorary Tennessee Colonel by Governor Ned McWherter in 1987 and was a well-known musician in the area. Mr. Poff had performed at the Grand Ol Opry numerous times.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Catherine Peters; and brothers, Mack Poff, Wallace Poff and William Poff.

Surviving are his wife, Joan Hicks Poff of the home; daughters, Carla and husband Larry McMurray of Gate City, Paula and husband Sidney France of Gate City, Becky and husband Tony France of Gate City; a beloved granddaughter, Summer France; brother, Herman "Jim" and wife Betty Poff of Gate City; sister, Etta Mae Poff of Kingsport.

Calling hours will be anytime at the residence of his daughter, Paula and Sidney France.

A memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. today in the chapel of Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City, Va., with the Rev. Echol Herron and the Rev. Fred Freeman officiating.

Music will be provided by Rev. Freeman and Sons.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Wellmont Hospice, attn: Angie Browning, 280 Steeles Road, Bristol, Tenn. 37620.
