as you can see, the spelling of our last name is DEMCHUK. I have found that the correct spelling from my ancestry is actually DEMCZUK. Which DEMCHUK are you looking for?

Immigration documentation should provide you w/exact place of origin in Ukraine. The Australian Archives are free to citizens and available online. All DP's/Displaced People immigrating to Australia post WW2 had to fill out extensive personal questionnaires. These records should confirm all kinds of details. You might find that family is listed as Polish. Don't let that throw you. For a period of time post WW2, the Allies did not recognize Ukrainians as a nationality, so they lumped them in with other ethnic groups, depending on the area they were originally from. As per personal questionnaire, you should also be able to get a handle on the demczyk/demczuk and ziemlaneyj WW2 experience and the exact place of origin.

I read one of your replies to another query and noticed that you have the same name as me. Quite unusual. Where do you reside? Do you know much about your ancestry?

Surnames: Balan, Demyanchuk, Demchuk, Demczyk, Demczuk
My great grandmother was Maria (Demchuk) Balan. I have her family history back several generations - through the time of Catherine the Great when two brothers, Michael and Wasyl, left Ukraine and changed the name from Demyanchuk to Demchuk. Maria comes from Michael's line. I have no lineage for Wasyl's line but what I do have is extensive. Happy to share it. Email me at krapstonia@mac.com.
But I'm really looking for any information on the Demchuk, Demyanchuk line or the Balan line. Maria married Nick (Mykola) Balan whose cousin was an Andrew. That's all I know.

DEMCHUK.

Today there are appx 20,000 Demchuk/Demczuk = Демчук living in Ukraine. It is a very common surname!

The only possible connection your Demchuk might have w/this Demchuk from Dniepropetrovsk is there were Cossack in the 16th century, who came West to the aid of the Polish King against the Ottoman hoards. Some decided to stay after that and settled in the Carpathian general area and some went home, to Central Ukraine.

GGGrandparents Petro and Nastasia (Anastazia) DEMCZUK (pronounced just like Demchuk) arrived in Halifax, Canada w/their children in April 1899 on the SS Palatia.*** They were emigrating from Szubranetz >Austria. This was in the Historic Bukowyna Province, the Land of Beech Trees. Today the village is called Shubranetz = Шубранець in Ukrainian > Zastavnivskiy raion/district > Chernivetska (Chernivtsi) oblast/region. The village recently celebrated its 574th anniversary, although there was settlement there, dated scientifically back to 5500BC. It was called the Trypillian Culture. 5500BC is PRE Egyptian Pharoah Period.

Pradeedo and Prababa were likely Christian Orthodox and those church registers for your ancestral village have been filmed by LDS. The difficulty is reading the records, as it is in Old Church Slovanic.

Post your inquiry in the Chernivetskij sub-forum and you will find some very knowledgeable researchers there to help you research your Bukowynian Heritage.
